"Basics of Oil Painting"
June 20, 21, 22 (10am-4pm)
Connie Winters has become a very popular and sought-after teacher of oil painting. Although her works are impressionistic, her method of teaching can be used for any style. She is one of the few instructors who teach real basics of getting the paint from the pallet to the canvas.
There will be a demonstration each morning to show how a painting evolves from beginning to almost finish. The first day usually starts with a still life to promote the importance of working from life and how to go about it. Connie likes to demonstrate painting an interior, and a landscape to show that the same steps can be applied to any situation. Color, composition, value, drawing and many useful pointers will be touched on. The whole spectrum of utensils, canvases, mediums, etc. will be discussed. Connie is open to all questions during the workshop, is patient, thorough and consistent.

“Floral Abstraction in Oil and Mixed Media”
Playing with the contrast of man-made vs organic forms
August 15, 16, 17 (10am-5pm)
Nicholas studied at Radford University as a drawing major and found a love for painting studying under two of his mentors, Halide Salam and Z.L. Feng. He spent seven years in the art program at Radford during which he became an Instructor of Record and obtained a Master’s degree in Painting. With his recent mentor, Andrew Braitman, Nicholas flourished as his passion for creating met with his passion for sharing his knowledge with others as he began teaching classes and workshops.
In this workshop, first, we will discuss different flowers and blooms which will be easy without drawing with the paint brush. Next, we’ll create a form and composition, possibly on a tabletop and consider the shape of the vase, along with the shape of the bouquet. We will discuss and add a design, along with a splash of color to pull your eye into the painting, possibly by using a stencil pattern or brush mark. While building color into the bouquet and vase, we’ll discuss a variety of application tools – knife, brush, splatter, scumble, subtraction, etc. along with adding collage elements. We will finish by adding the finishing touches, while not making the painting too predictable. Two nicely “finished” pieces is our goal at the end of this abstract workshop.

"Mini Alla Prima in Oil"
June 13, 14, 15 (10am-5 pm)
Nicholas studied at Radford University as a drawing major and found a love for painting studying under two of his mentors, Halide Salam and Z.L. Feng. He spent seven years in the art program at Radford during which he became an Instructor of Record and obtained a Master’s Degree in Painting. With his recent mentor, Andrew Braitman, Nicholas flourished as his passion for creating met with his passion for sharing his knowledge with others. He began teaching classes and workshops and was invited to be a guest lecturer at many institutions.
In this Mini Alla Prima (at the start, one time through) workshop, we will discuss how to look at and break down the essence of a landscape, such as the directional stroke, rhythm, color, or value. We will also talk about how each landscape will be broken down into at least 3 different sections, along with how to think about the unbalance and eye movement through the art works. We will discuss the 5 main points that make up a little alla prima, including color, direction, tool, focal point, and texture. Participants will look at other artists’ attempt to get to this “essence” of the landscape and tackle it on their own. We will work on an average of 5 x7 and possible finish up with a larger alla prima. By the end of the workshop, each participant should walk away with 8-9 mini paintings.

“Plein Air Workshop in Oil” at Local Park
August 1, 2, 3 (10am-5pm)
Plein air painting, or painting en plein air, is simply painting from life outdoors. We can learn from the outdoor experience and use that information in our studio paintings. Studying and painting from life is the best way to learn about how to create atmosphere and convincing natural color in your landscapes.
This is a 3 day outdoor painting workshop where we will begin at Carlton Gallery with a brief talk about what to bring and consider when plein air painting. Linda will share information about the tools, tips, and techniques she has learned through trial and error and years of painting in nature. Instruction and painting will be in one of the local parks with facilities. Students will have a chance to complete 3 to 6 small paintings during the workshop and will learn what is needed for a solid start, using the fundamentals of Drawing, Value, Design and Color. Linda will give demos in oil, and individual instruction with students at their easels. No plein air experience necessary. All levels welcome however some experience with your medium is needed. A supply list will be provided.

“Alternative Firing Workshop”
August 18, 19 (10am-5pm) – Friday and Saturday Workshop
This 2-Day workshop is intended for ceramicists who have limited to no previous knowledge of Alternative Firing techniques or those who would like a fresh perspective on these methods.
The workshop will start with a brief demonstration on how I mix, apply, and burnish with Terra Sigillata. This workshop will cover my firing techniques which include, Saggar firing and Raku firing using soluble metal salts and a combination of these methods. Saggar creates a localized reduction atmosphere that concentrates the effects of salts, metal oxides and organic materials on the surface of the ware. Participants are encouraged to bring their own organic materials to experiment and use.
Participants will not be making any work, and each would ideally bring suitable bisque pieces - either sculptural or vessel forms. Information on this will be provided after registration. The focus will be on decorating and firing techniques. It is anticipated that each participant will take home around 6 finished pieces. Most pieces should be of 'modest' size (no taller than 8 inches).
