Bob Meier

Bob Meier began his career as a clay artist almost be accident. A transplant originally from Philadelphia, PA, he moved to Boone after his military service in 1973 to complete his education at Appalachian State University. He began in Technical Education, with concentrations in graphic arts, drafting and technical illustration, and crafts. His first semester had a class in pottery/ceramics to fill a spot in his schedule and he said, “It was love at first sight”.  While finishing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at A.S.U., he continued to extend his interest by taking all the clay course work offered.

Bob Meier was one of the original founding members of Hands Crafts Gallery in Boone which established this region’s first cooperative gallery in 1975. He was a member for 25 years, including a period of 4 years when he was president of the Board of Directors. Bob had a home studio for 10 years before establishing Doe Ridge Pottery on King Street in Boone in 1988 which he recently sold.  He continues to create stunning artwork for retail, along with commissions from individuals and designers.

Bob Meier’s professional memberships include Blue Ridge Hearthside Crafts and Southern Highlands Crafts Guild. He is also a member of the Piedmont Craft Guild, the North Carolina Pottery Center, Blowing Rock Historical Society and the newly organized Potters of the Blue Ridge.

Bob Meier’s artwork has exhibited at the Folk Art Center in Asheville and the Moses Cone Manor in Blowing Rock. He is represented by the North Carolina Crafts Gallery in Carrboro; Appalachian Craft Gallery in Asheville; North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh; Seagrove Pottery of Pinehurst in Aberdeen, and Seagrove Pottery in Cary and Seagrove.
